Jack Nicklaus’ Old Works Golf Course In Anaconda Montana, Resurrection Amidst Ruins

In Southwestern Montana, an old copper smelting site was resurrected after nearly a century of ruin in the Anaconda community. In 1983, it was labeled a Super Fund clean-up site and work began to make the area safe that continued until the Course’s opening in 1997.

The Warm Springs Creek and reminders of the mining that once took place here provide an unusual and drastic backdrop for this course. Bunkers made of slag, multiple tees, and gender specific options make this course stand out form the competition. Golf Digest cited Old Works as 2nd on its best new affordable public courses in 1998.

Tee time begins at 6:30. Reservations are needed 3 days in advance. The course opens in April and continues until the end of October. It has an open guest policy. An on site restaurant and beverage cart provide refreshment for visitors. Golf cart rental and golf club rental are both offered on site as well. Walking is allowed if you prefer to leave the cart at the clubhouse.

There is a ladies only golf course of five tees that ranks 65.1 on a men’s scale and has a slope of 106 feet. Three practice tees are offered. The men’s version has six tees, and have a ranking of 74.6 with a slope of 138 feet.

This challenging family course is suitable for beginners as well as the seasoned pro and offers something for everyone, even if it’s just some wonderful scenery.
