Ocean Spray Affects Play At Poipu Bay, Hawaii

In cart satellite GPS with a color monitor will make your play at Poipu Bay more enjoyable as you wander around the near 7,000-yard-long course, navigating the Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed facility. Staring at the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, however can take your mind off the game and when that happens the course will pounce and have you for lunch.

The course plays host to the annual PGA Gram Slam of Golf, pitting the winners from four major championships that year against each other with a million dollar prize. Located on the island of Kauai, it edges the ocean on holes 15, 16 and 17 where a stray tee shot can end up being shark bait.

Holes one, two and three circumnavigate the mountain behind the Hyatt Regency before coming back to a long dogleg on hole four. The back nine holes offer the closest and most spectacular views of the ocean and on a windy day you can feel the ocean spray hitting the green on number 11. Holes 12, 13 and 14 are pretty straight forward with bunkers playing along both sides of the fairways and you can get lost in the ocean on the next three holes before finishing the course with a par 3 hole number 17 and a twisting long, par 5 18th hole.

The course naturally rises and falls to the levels of the land established long ago by active volcanoes, but getting absorbed in sightseeing along this course will add nothing but trouble to your quest to beat the course.
