Georgia Course Requires Masters’ Approach

One week a year the masters of the game of golf converge on the only golf course in the country where a green jacket is more prized than money. Winning the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club is seen as the pinnacle of career and includes the best golfers in the world.

Tour championships and prize money account for part of the eligibility to play this course, but being named one of the top 100 golfers in the world sure helps a lot. While subtle course changes are typical throughout the season, Augusta is known for the challenges presented by several holes on the course, starting with hole number one.

Bunkers on the right and trees to the left require an accurate tee shot, but a straight hit towards the middle of the fairway can end up on the right side adding club length to the second hit. From the number six tee you can look down on the green and see the swell on the right side. If the pin placement is on the right, it can make it one of the most difficult putting surfaces on the course.

The par 3 number 12 may look short, but the creek running in front of the green may add pressure for a slightly longer shot off the tee, while the sand trap behind the green will keep your ball from disappearing into the unknown. Now, however, a chip from the sand towards the water is needed.

Hitting over water onto a small green guarded by bunkers on the right side, greet players on hole 16 and a small piece of ground can lead the best hits to roll into the drink. Accuracy is needed on this one.
