On the northernmost barrier island in Florida, the state's greenest resort is just 29 miles from Jacksonville International Airport. This resort was selected by "GOLF Magazine" to its 1996 list of "Silver Medal Resorts." The fairways and greens of Amelia's forty-five holes of golf have been carefully placed beneath an umbrella of towering oaks. There are three nine hole courses, known as the Amelia Links, designed by Pete Dye, which are played in three eighteen hole combinations. These courses are bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by the Intracoastal Waterway. The Oakmarsh Course is the longest of the three nines. There are numerous fairway and greenside bunkers that make shot accuracy essential. Oakmarsh is the most demanding course at Amelia Links. Hole #8, a 342-yard, par 4, is a narrow hole that was designed to force the golfer to play across two tidal creeks before reaching its elevated green. The Oysterbay Course is perhaps the most dramatic of the three nines with marshlands coming directly into play on four of its nine holes. The Oceanside Course has three holes that Pete Dye built atop mammoth dunes, which provide incredible ocean views. It also has dense underbrush that is subtly treacherous. Tom Fazio's Long Point Course has a combination of ocean, marsh, woods, and water hazards coming into play throughout its design. This course was ranked 51st by "Golf Digest" on its list of "Top 75 Resort Courses" for 1992. The front nine is shorter and tighter than the back nine, so getting off to a good start is very important while playing here. The signature hole is #2, a 540-yard, par 5, featuring a deep green with numerous narrow bunkers. It is located on a dramatic setting alongside Nassau Sound. The other tee shown is an additional men's tee. This course is not open to the public until noon. Long Point is also the home for the Amelia Island Plantation Golf School which offers various teaching programs consisting of two to four days of training instructions.
