San Diego’s Torrey Pines Combines Ocean and Mountain Views

One misstep off the light rough of hole number 4 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California can land you on the beach of the Pacific Ocean, after a tumble down the cliffs. Home of the Buick Invitational the south course offers spectacular ocean views while also being carved into the beachside mountains.

The Rees Jones-designed course opened in 2001 and its just over 7,600 brutal yards will become the setting for the PGA United States Open Championship in 2008. The Par 3 hole number 8 may give many golfers a false sense of security. At 149 yards from the center white tees, the green is guarded by bunkers so a straight tee shot to the green is needed to stay out of the beach. The black tees are 198 yards from the stick but give a straight shot to the green while the white tees are tucked in behind some trees.

Despite being heavily lined by trees, the 456 yards Par 4 hole 12 offers a narrow path for an easy par. But fading just a little off either side of the fairway or the green can land you in sand. Hole 13 at 521 yards should be an easy Eagle if you can get past the extremely narrow approach and the six bunkers surrounding the green.

The finishing hole is a fairly straight in 534 yard par 5 with bunkers on both sides about halfway down the narrow strip of a fairway. Your approach to the green will need to be straight and accurate as bunkers guard the two sides and a pond sits right in front of the green to drown any short strikes towards the hole.
