Gallery Courses Offer Arizona’s Finest
Nestled between the Tortolita Mountains and the Santa Catalina Mountains, just outside Tucson, the Gallery of Dove Mountain offers two John Fought-designed courses that wind their way through canyons and naturally rough terrain to form the premier golfing experience for the high handicappers as well as the professionals.
While water stands in the way on only two holes on the south course, desert and an abundance of cactus supply more than enough hazards to make play interesting. The south course hosts the PGA World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship with a purse in 2007 of $8 million.
When designing the North course, Fought had some help from Tom Lehman the 2006 Ryder Cup Captain and is ranked number one in southwest Arizona by Golf Digest. It can be a particularly frustrating course, even for those with a handicap. As on the south course, only two hole have water in play with the desert’s natural abundance of wildlife blending with the course’s design to create a spectacular view as well as challenging play.
In a rare occurrence rocks, mountains and desert have been brought together to beautifully represent the challenging game of golf. With the player matching wits with the course, both the north and south courses of Dove Mountain have the mental advantage. Four possible tee starts to represent the abilities and handicap of the players can make the course play long with 6,722 from the blue tees and 7,412 from the gold. The course length from the green tees falls to just 6,133 while the red tees’ total length is 5,423.
